Health Benefits of Sea Moss

“A healthy outside starts from the inside.”  – Robert Urich. Good health is not something you can buy; you have to earn it. Sea moss may help you as it has many benefits for your health. Moreover, It has the same benefits as other types of sea algae because they share similar compounds. Here I’ve got a list of benefits of Sea Moss:

  1. Sea moss build muscle and aid in workout recovery

If you want to build muscles and workout recovery, Sea moss can help you here. It is rich in an amino acid called taurine. It helps with muscle-building. Sea moss plays a vital role in helping the body recover from workouts and relieve fatigue.

We get little micro-tears in our muscles when we exercise, but amino acids can help with that recovery. 100 grams of Sea moss has about 6 grams of protein. You can’t rely solely on sea moss for exercise recovery. Ensure maintaining a healthy morning routine, getting enough nutritious food, hydration, rest, etc.

According to a study by the Asian Journal of Medical Sciences of 80 adults over the age of 40 with musculoskeletal symptoms, people given specific sea moss had reduced fatigue, pain levels, and exhaustion. It was caused by high levels of amino acids and total proteins present in the plant.

Research posted to Marine Drugs noted that the fucoxanthin compound in many seaweeds helps to break down and metabolize fat. Weight loss effects may vary from person to person. Research focuses on isolated compounds rather than the impact of sea moss generally.

  1. Sea Moss may support gut health

Our body has 40 trillion bacteria. Most of the bacteria are found in the gut. Collectively, these bacteria are known as Gut Microbiome. They’re essential for overall health. However, certain bacteria in our intestines can also contribute to many diseases.

The food we eat and many other factors can impact the bacteria found in our digestive tract. Sea moss may have prebiotic effects, which improve the health of the gut microbiome. Sea moss can help replenish the good bacteria in our gut.

According to BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, sea moss is rich in dietary fiber and oligosaccharides such as carrageenan. Hence, it supports your gut health by feeding healthy bacteria in the intestines. This was an animal study, though.

Sea moss is rich in dietary fiber; it has polysaccharides that we can’t digest, but the bacteria in our gut can, so it acts as a prebiotic or food source for these beneficial gut microbes.

Sea moss feeds the gut bacteria that help create a favorable environment promoting the microbes which offer us the most significant benefits. Our digestive system is full of good and bad bacteria. Balancing those bacteria is an essential element of your wellness because gut health is associated with overall health.

  1. Sea Moss may support immune health

Boosting your immunity sounds excellent, but doing so has proved elusive for many reasons. Your immune system is a whole system, not a single entity of your body. You have to take care of it if you want to live a healthy life. Sea moss can promote a healthy immune system as it is rich in prebiotics.

It is high in iron, phytochemicals, and antioxidants, which contribute to immune health and provide health benefits like immune modulation and improved immune response for the consumer.

  1. Sea Moss may support thyroid health

Iodine deficiency can cause thyroid problems. Iodine protects us from autoimmune diseases in which the immune system attacks the thyroid. The thyroid needs iodine to create and use important hormones in the body.

Our thyroid gland releases hormones to help govern our growth, energy, reproduction, and repair. Moreover, the thyroid needs several nutrients: iodine, amino acid, and tyrosine.

When our body doesn’t get enough iodine, our thyroid may not function correctly and cause metabolic issues. Sea moss may help prevent iodine deficiency as it is a natural source of iodine. Therefore, when we eat a diet rich in iodine, it may support thyroid health.

  1. Sea Moss may support heart health

If you want to keep your heart healthy with seaweeds, then Sea moss may help you get it. As mentioned above, Sea moss is higher in fiber. In addition, sea moss is one of the best plant sources that contain omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are essential for health, especially for the heart and cardiovascular systems.

It may also improve your cholesterol balance and act as a blood thinner which may cause reducing the risk of heart disease. However, more research is required to clarify the specific health effects of sea moss on heart health.

Uses of Sea Moss

  1. You can use it as a natural thickening agent in commercial foods.
  2. You can use it as a consumer health supplement.
  3. It may also be used to make a gel at home.
  4. You may get various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from it; that may benefit overall health.
  5. You may easily add it to foods and beverages.

The bottom line

Sea moss is a spiny sea vegetable similar to seaweeds and sea algae. Sea moss has higher fiber than most vegetables. However, its nutritional composition can vary. Consuming large amounts of sea moss may equal consuming high levels of iodine, fiber, or heavy metals.

Sea moss may help lower bad cholesterol, which is one of the factors for heart disease. In addition, it helps lower your blood pressure, which is a vital factor in heart health. It may help build muscles, lose weight, support gut and thyroid health, and improve heart health.

Overall,  more research is required on the health effects of sea moss in humans to determine its impact on consumer health products. The current research into sea moss has limitations, the health benefits of sea moss aren’t heavily studied, and scientists still need further evidence to declare any health claims.

But on the other hand, Some benefits appear promising based on sea moss studies. Also, Sea moss supplements are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But still, it’s safe for consumption, and its benefits align with the other seaweeds.
